Girls on Top

So I was listening to some songs for BoA's debut American album. I was a little excited and surprised when I saw one of the tracks of the album was a English version of her Korean song Girls on Top. However I was a little less than impressed with the quality and lyrics of the song.

Girls on Top English

Aside from using the same exact instrumental track nothing else is the same about this song. The lyrics to this song are just saying girls are more than just looks. And that they are fake and superficial. Girls should just be true to themselves. And not to judge them by what's inside rather than outside. Which is mediocre at best. The really lacking a lot compared to the original. The vocals are also a lot softer and not really confident sounding. I understand English is her 3rd language, but that's not really an excuse. She should have waited to debut until she was a little better in English. The only time her voice sounds powerful is the last yeah at the end. The rap is kind of cool though, mostly because it was really Americanized.

Girls on Top Korean

Now this version of the song amazing. The lyrics talk about how girls shouldn't be confined to the roles society gives girls. And that everyone is a human and gender means nothing. And that it shouldn't be a mans world anymore girls should be on top. Aside from the lyrics being more meaningful the vocals itself are 100 times better. She has a really powerful voice in this song. The voice she's know for. Even the yeah at the end is better in this version. The only thing that's worse is the rap. Mostly because the Korean lyrics for the rap are pretty stupid.

I was all for BoA coming to America, but I'm actually really disappointed with her English songs. She completely changed her music just to conform to the US. I really hate that. But maybe there's still hope for BoA. I mean her Japanese was a little rough in the beginning and now it's pretty good. So maybe BoA's next album will be a little better. It won't make it to the top ten but maybe it'll be a little better.
